Originating in Wales in the 1970s, coasteering has become one of the UK’s fastest growing outdoor adventure activities and coasteering in North Wales is particularly popular. But what exactly does coasteering involve? Keep reading our guide to find out what coasteering is, the best places to go coasteering and top tips to make the most out of your experience.

What is coasteering?

When asked what exactly coasteering is there seems to be a real mix of answers. The nature of the activity is what makes it difficult to define, but that’s also what makes it so interesting.

Put simply, coasteering is a group activity that involves traversing a coastline through a mix of rock climbing and swimming, plus a bit of jumping too, so expect to get wet! The main aspects of coasteering are:

  • Wild swimming – sometimes a coasteering route may require you to swim to get from one section to another
  • Low-level traversing – this is where you use partly-submerged rocks to make your way across a section of deep water, making your way sideways one foot at a time. You can make it as easy or difficult as you like, plus if you lose your footing you have the deep water to fall back into
  • Cliff jumping – this is probably the most fun part of coasteering, or the most daunting for some. A guide will often suggest you start off with a small jump and work your way up to the larger jumps, helping even the most cautious take the leap
  • Cave discovery – with some cave entrances cut off by the tide, coasteering enables you to access some of the most unique and untouched parts of the coastline
  • Sluices and pour-overs – this is where water rises and pushes between two rocks or pours over a ledge into a deep pool; if timed right, you can let the ocean take you through or over a section
  • Gullies – often hidden and requiring a bit of wriggling to get to, gullies can give you access to untouched sections of coastline
  • Whirlpools – if timed right, certain rock formations and layouts create a fun whirlpool effect

The best places to go coasteering in North Wales

coasteering north wales

Coasteering originated in Wales in the 1970s so it’s no surprise that the country offers some of the best coasteering spots. North Wales, in particular, has miles of exciting coastline perfect for exploring and plenty of spots to choose from. Here’s some of the best spots:

  • Holy Island – the deep clean water, hidden beaches, sea cliffs and the largest sea cave in Wales make this a top destination for coasteering enthusiasts
  • Llŷn Peninsula – with its mixture of low cliffs and larger waves, the Llŷn Peninsula is accessible to everyone of all levels of ability. Plus in some areas you might even be lucky enough to play with the seals. The most recognised spots are the villages of Morfa Nefyn and Aberdaron

Top tips for coasteering

coasteering north wales

Don’t do it alone

Coasteering is most definitely a team activity and it’s advisable to do it as part of a guided tour with an experienced guide. An experienced guide is sure to know the route like the back of their hand and what may look safe to a newbie might not be safe to a seasoned professional.

Wear the right gear

An activity provider will often provide you with the correct equipment and advise you on what to wear beforehand but if you’re curious about what you’ll need, here’s a list of the essentials:

  • Wetsuit – a full length wetsuit will keep you dry all over and provide extra warmth
  • Coasteer shorts – these are usually made from neoprene and are specifically designed for coasteering
  • Trainers – make sure they lace up; old trainers are great for coasteering as they provide the grip and sole protection needed to tackle the wet, slippery rocks
  • Buoyancy aid – even the strongest swimmers need a little help to keep afloat sometimes
  • Helmet – a must-have in case you experience any bumps or falls

Keep an eye on the weather and the tide

As coasteering takes place where the ocean meets the rock, it’s important to always check the sea state and tide to make sure the conditions are suitable and safe.

Coasteering and wildlife

coasteering north wales

If you take part in a coasteering session here in North Wales you’re sure to see some wildlife; including seals, dolphins and razorbills. The Anglesey coastline is one of the most varied and distinctive landscapes in Britain and is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as well as home to a variety of wildlife.

Coasteering activities at Silver Bay

We’re lucky to be situated next to a stunning piece of coastline, perfect for a spot of coasteering. That’s why we offer family coasteering sessions during the school holidays, guided by an experienced coach.

That’s just one of the amazing benefits of being a holiday home owner here at Silver Bay Holiday Village. You can find out more about Silver Bay life on our blog, from organised activities on site to all the amazing things to see and do in the area.

We are thrilled to announce that we have been awarded the Green Coast Award by Keep Wales Tidy.

The Green Coast Award recognises the beautiful, untouched and rugged beaches for their excellent water quality and unspoiled environment. Unlike the beaches that have received a Blue Flag Award, a Green Coast Award beach doesn’t have the infrastructure and intensive management generally associated with the more traditional seaside resort.

In order to receive the Green Coast Award the beach must comply with the following criteria:

  • Have excellent water quality
  • Encourage dog and horse owners to clean up after their animals by providing suitable facilities and literature
  • Have a guardianship scheme in place
  • Provide information on locally organised environmental activities
  • Public access to the beach must be safe and well maintained

Wales has some of the most beautiful and well managed beaches in the world and the Wales Coast Awards help to raise environmental awareness, recognise good practice and promote Wales as an international destination.

18 beaches in Wales were awarded the Green Coast Award this year, recognising all the hidden gems on our coastline. The award helps to encourage people to “adopt” areas of the coast, helping contribute towards the sustainability of the area while promoting volunteering, and we have been recognised as the first private business to apply for a coast award on behalf of a beach.

The local contribution is evident in recent news with Anglesey being announced as the UK’s first county to be designated a Plastic Free Community by the marine conservation charity, Surfers Against Sewage.

What other environmental initiatives are we involved in?

Obeewan Silver Bay beekeeper

Our dedication to preserving the natural environment and supporting British wildlife is a priority for us. As well as the Green Coast Award, we were also awarded the David Bellamy Gold Award for our commitment to protecting the local wildlife, reducing energy use, recycling waste, and supporting the local community. As part of our commitment to the rural environment and the impact of the coastal path, we have also started to plant indigenous species to reestablish the flora and fauna.

And not forgetting our honey bees. The bees are still in their winter home at the moment but will be moving back this month. They were very busy during the warm spell in April, so much so that we had to hire an extra pair of hands (or paws). We also had to make up some extra frames in anticipation but Obeewan was too busy eating all the honey so our beekeeper, Jonathan, had to do it all by himself. Starting in the May half term holidays, we will be offering ‘Meet the Bees’ sessions throughout the summer so our owners can have the opportunity to meet the queen and her workers.

You can find out more about our beach and boat park as well as any further updates on our ongoing work to benefit the local wildlife and environment.

We had such a fantastic time during our last open day that we’ve decided to host another!

Taking place on Sunday the 20th of August 2017, come and visit us between 12pm and 4pm and explore our picturesque holiday village and our magnificent lodges.

Of course, there will be champagne and nibbles to enjoy, and as well as taking a look at our lodges, you can also explore our fantastic amenities.

But for now, here’s a little taster of what you can expect…

Our Lodges

Whether it’s the contemporary Lookout lodge, or the luxurious Reef Edge, it could all be yours…

Imagine kicking back in the centre of luxury, switching off from the outside world, and spending time with your loved ones.

It’s what attracts so many to our holiday village, and why we think it’ll attract you too.

Our lodges are finished to the highest of standards, and come with beautiful views of the coast, Snowdon, and the lovely village of Rhoscolyn. They have two or three bedrooms, meaning there’s plenty of space for everyone, and they are the finest in modern, spacious holiday home living.

Our holiday properties also come with a garden, and can be fitted with bespoke decking giving you effectively an extra room outdoors, and a place where you can sip a cocktail, enjoying the sunset, night after night.

Everyone that comes to Silver Bay falls in love with our lodges and our holiday park – and we’re certain that you will too.

Silver Bay Beach

As one of the most beautiful coasts in the country, Silver Bay beach has the ability to take your breath away as soon as you lay your eyes on it.

Bask in the cool waters, or spend some time constructing the finest sand castle in all the land with your little ones. Silver Bay Beach is simply full of family memories just waiting to be created.

Best of all, our beach is exclusively open to lodge owners, and it has a brand new beach cafe to enjoy! Did someone say ice cream?!

Our beach is so beautiful that is the proud owner of a few awards. We boast a Green Flag Award, as well as a Seaside Award which is brand new for 2017. We keep a tidy, green coast for everyone to enjoy – and we now have the awards to prove it!

The Spa at Silver Bay

When you’re done exploring the beach, The Spa at Silver Bay is the place to be. Our Spa team are incredibly skilled when it comes to relaxation and treatments, and we’ve just launched our brand new Spa offering! You can take a look at it here.

Most of our treatments are done using fabulous ELEMIS products because we know they’re great for all skin types. And when you’ve had your treatment, whether it be a facial or full body massage, remember that the gym is there to be used, as is our beautiful pool and jacuzzi.

It really is relaxation at its finest.

Open Day at Silver Bay

We hope to see you this Sunday for our open day. You’ll get the chance to explore our Lookout lodge, the beach, our spa and much more.

Remember, there’s no need to book, but if you’d like to find out more you can contact us on 01407 860 860, or request someone to call you here.

Our stunning beach is a home to sea, sand, and a bucketload of fun – and we do everything we can to make sure it looks the part too!

From making sure our coast is green (which has won us a Green Coast Award) to improving our beachside facilities with our beautiful cafe (it’ll be open soon!), we endeavour to make every visit to Silver Bay Beach one to remember.

Seaside Award

We were thrilled to discover last week that we’re now the proud owners of a Seaside Award. Presented to us by Keep Wales Tidy as part of the Wales coast Awards, Silver Bay Beach has been recognised for it’s tidy and well-tended to coast and waters.

Awarded for being home to quality facilities, we’re incredibly proud to everyone who works hard to make Silver Bay Beach the picturesque beach haven that it is. The Seaside Award recognises those coasts that meet the nationwide standard for the best beaches across the UK, and the flag is a symbol of superb quality, where visitors are guaranteed to find a clean, safe, attractive and well-managed stretch of coast.’

Take a look at our shiny certificate below!
