With Halloween just around the corner, it’s time to get creative with your celebrations. Take a look at our list of innovative activities for the entire family to enjoy at home this spooky season.

Pumpkin Carving

Is it even Halloween if you’ve not carved a pumpkin? Pumpkin carving is the perfect October competition for your entire household to get involved in. There’s still plenty of socially distanced pumpkin picking opportunities around Anglesey, with farms including Bellis Brothers Farm, Chirk Castle and Manorafon Farm still offering the pumpkin picking experience.

Trick or Treat Scavenger Hunt

With the traditional way of trick-or-treating not being possible this year, it doesn’t mean that Halloween is cancelled. It’s time to put a little twist with a trick or treat scavenger hunt, like an Easter Egg hunt but spookier!  You can hide chocolates, sweets or whatever you fancy around the house/garden. Just make sure you don’t forget about the chocolate hidden behind the radiator! Get the kids all dressed up as normal and send them off on their hunt!

Host a Virtual Halloween Party

Despite not being able to socialise indoors with anyone outside of your household, it doesn’t mean you can still enjoy Halloween with them. Thanks to technology there are still ways for you to connect with your friends/family during this spooky season. Decorate your house, throw on a fang-tastic outfit and let the party begin! You can have a virtual costume contest, tell spooky stories, or even host a classic Zoom quiz (Halloween edition of course).

Halloween movie marathon

There’s nothing better than getting cosy on the sofa with the family on a cold autumn day. In this era of movie subscription services, there are thousands of movies available to watch with a few clicks of a button. There’s plenty of spooktastic Halloween films for the entire family to enjoy with kids classics like Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Casper! For those feeling extra brave horror classics including IT and The Shining are perfect for this season, even if you’re watching through your fingers!

Silver Bay Holiday Village is situated on Holy Island, located just off the western edge of the Isle of Anglesey. Yes, you read that correctly, this is an island off the coast of another island! Covering an area of only 15 square miles, Holy Island might be small but it certainly packs a punch with coastlines full of tiny coves, sweeping bays and stunning headlands. There’s so much to explore on this gorgeous island.

Porth Dafarch

Porthdafarch Rd, Holyhead LL65 2LS

20 minute drive from Silver Bay

Porth Dafarch is a picturesque cove located over a mile south-west of Holyhead on Holy Island. Perfect for families, Porth Dafarch’s sandy beach is nicely sheltered below rugged headlands making it ideal for safe paddling and swimming. It’s an extremely popular beach for water sports including canoeing, surfing and coasteering and scuba diving.

This beach is owned by the National Trust and is just one of 6 beaches on Anglesey to have a Blue Flag status for its water quality and cleanliness. In fact, during high season this beach is cleaned every morning. For all our dog owners, please note that this beach has a dog ban between May 1st and September 30th. A Beach Warden is on duty during late May and early September to enforce this rule.

Trearddur Bay Beach

Trearddur Bay, Holyhead LL65 2UL

14 minute drive from Silver Bay

This popular wide sandy beach is located about 2 miles south of Holyhead. Scuba diving and sailing are popular activities at Trearddur Bay when conditions are good this beach is also popular for surfing. If you’re not into watersports don’t worry, this beach is also popular for fishing so you can still enjoy the water.

There are two incredible restaurants located by this beach Waterfront Restaurant and The Sea Shanty Bar/Restaurant so there’s plenty of options for food during your trip. Please note that dog restrictions apply on the southern half of the beach between May 1st and September 30th with Beach Wardens on duty.

Porth Castell and Porth Diana

Trearddur Rd, Trearddur Bay, Holyhead LL65

15 minute drive from Silver Bay

Here you are getting two beaches in one with these two neighbouring small sandy coves. Located within a short walking distance from Trearddur Bay, these beaches are extremely popular with locals and tourists alike. Porth Diana is the largest of the beaches and is commonly used by the local yacht club for mooring. For those looking to swim or snorkel then Porth Castell is the better choice.

Borthwen, Traeth Borth Wen

Rhoscolyn, Holyhead LL65 2NX

12 minutes drive from Silver Bay

Borthwen is located approximately halfway between Traeth Bychan and Benllech, it has a shore of pebbles, rocks and rock pools backed by low cliffs. Access to this beach is down a little-used path, be careful these are very steep steps. There is a small free car park near the beach and the beach also hosts a few basic amenities including toilets and showers.

This is a great beach for the entire family with its shallow sloping sands and abundance of rockpools to explore. The most popular activities are kayaking/canoeing, diving, snorkelling, sailing and swimming.

Silver Bay/Traeth Llydan, Rhoscolyn

We couldn’t write this list without including the beach right here at Silver Bay! If you love quiet secluded beaches then this is the perfect place for you. This crescent-shaped shady bay is about 600 yards wide with a few rocky islets and a colourful variety of pebbles that can be found on the shore. Silver Bay Beach is perfect to walk your furry friends as this beach is dog friendly.

If you’re looking to explore a little more of Silver Bay, visit Porth yr Ych a short distance to the west, this small cove of rocks and shingles is perfect for those like a little physical adventure.

It is also worth remembering that there are picturesque coves all the way around Holy Island ready for you to explore.

Here at Silver Bay, we think Anglesey is pretty great. We benefit greatly from the picturesque background we are lucky enough to reside in. Wales is one of the best places to be if you are an avid walker. We have hills, scenery, beaches, and the pubs to stop off after a long trek aren’t too bad either.

Silver Bay – Traeth Borthwen – Silver Bay

What’s better than the beach? TWO beaches! This walk takes you from Silver Bay Beach to Borthwen Beach in no time! The walk is 3.71km long, just slightly longer than the Silver Bay Loop. This walk takes you on a beautiful coastal route, perfect for all the budding photographers. Pack up a picnic and get your trainers on! The best bit? When you’re finished, you end up right back where you started.

Silver Bay – Borthwen Beach – St. Gwenfaen’s Church – Silver Bay

This is for the avid walkers! Following the coastal walk to Borthwen Beach, this walk gives you the choice of carrying on further, or turning back. Choosing to continue on, this stretch is 6.01km. Passing the fabulous Gastro Pub, The White Eagle you can be sure of a refreshment en route! This walk takes you to St. Gwenfaen’s Church where you can appreciate the stunning medieval architecture, built in 650 AD. After this, you follow the route right back to Silver Bay Beach – just in time for tea!

Anglesey is the perfect place for a bike ride and travelling the island on two wheels offers a different perspective compared to walking or driving. The list of cycle routes on Anglesey is a long one and everyone will have their preferred route, but we’ve put together some of our favourite Anglesey cycle routes in case you need some inspiration.

Lôn Lâs Cefni cycle

Lôn Lâs Cefni – 13 miles

Most of this route is traffic-free so perfect for a family ride out and the trail runs both north and south from the town of Llangefni. To the north is a two mile traffic-free trail that starts at the local nature reserve known as The Dingle (Pant y Pandy) and heads through woodland past Cefni Reservoir to a picnic spot. The southern section of the trail is much longer and follows the Afon Cefni across Malltraeth Marsh to Pont Marquis, joining a quiet lane that takes you to the village of Malltraeth. From Maltraeth you then turn south to head towards Newborough Forest, Anglesey’s largest woodland with plenty of tracks for exploring.

You can find the Lôn Lâs Cefni route here on the Visit Anglesey website.

Telor Tour cycle route

Telor Tour – 17 miles

The Telor Tour is a circular route, starting and finishing at Beaumaris with some amazing views of the sea on the way. Take a hilly ride up to Llanddona village then down to the coast for Penmon Priory and out to Black Point, which is the easternmost point of Anglesey. This is a great spot to stop off for some lunch plus you can catch some amazing views of Puffin Island and Trwyn Du Lighthouse. Penmon Priory is usually open and well worth a visit. The 400 year old Dovecote is also worth seeing plus there’s an ancient wishing well in a walled garden.

Take a look at the full Telor Tour route here.

Hebog Tour cycle route

Hebog Tour – 22 miles

The Hebog Tour is a circular route starting and finishing at Benllech. Make your way up to Moelfre, stopping at Din Lligwy on the way. Din Lligwy is an ancient village site near the coast and makes for a striking sight. Past Din Lligwy you will come to Lligwy beach, a lovely wide and sandy beach backed by low sand dunes. After Lligwy beach it’s a steady climb to Mynydd Bodafon, a small collection of peaks including the Arwydd, which is the highest point on the island of Anglesey. The remainder of the route is relatively easy; you can take a shorter route back round to Benllech or take a longer detour down to Llyn Cefni, the second largest manmade lake on Anglesey.

You can find a map of the Hebog Tour route here.

The Copper Trail

The Copper Trail – 33 miles

This route is perfect for those interested in geology as you have the option to take a detour up Parys Mountain and walk around the old copper mines. Starting at Llynnon Mill, near Llanddeusant, head towards Llanerchymedd. Continue to Penysarn; this is where you will pass the disused copper mines of Parys Mountain. Continue to Llaneilian and then on to the town of Amlwch Port, before heading to Llanfechell. The route then takes you to the coast and the Cemlyn Bay Nature Reserve, ideal if you’re a keen birdwatcher. Continue around Mynydd Y Garn, offering great views of Holyhead Bay, then through Llanrhyddlad to the finishing point at Llanddeusant.

Take a look at the Copper Trail Map here.

Tour de Mon Route – 76 miles

If you’re feeling adventurous, how about taking on the Tour de Mon Route? This is the longest route in our list but also offers the opportunity to see all of Anglesey’s spectacular coast including the picturesque cefni reservoir. This route is recommended for experienced riders, it is both challenging and scenic with incredible clifftop views of the Isle of Man on clear days.

You can find out more and view the Tour de Mon route here.
