Well what a year so far for the honeybees! The winter was long and there was a cold spell towards the end. The poor bees didn’t know what to make of it; they thought it should be spring by now (just like us!). Luckily for them we weren’t greedy and hadn’t taken any honey last year. We had been building them up last summer and autumn and letting them stock themselves for the winter. It was just as well we did for they needed last summer/autumn’s food stores to get them through that long winter!

However, since the spring came – it went with a ‘bang’ – the bees have really taken off! The Queens have been laying lots of new honeybees called ‘workers’ (especially Willow Queen, although Heather Queen is not far behind!) Unsurprisingly, workers get their name from the fact that they work their socks off! (well actually, bees don’t have socks!) Due to their hard-working nature, these workers have a very short lifespan at this time of year, about 6-7 weeks, so the Queen (who lives up to 5 years) has a busy job continuously laying new bees so that there are always plenty of workers to collect new pollen and nectar! And yes, they have been collecting lots of fresh pollen, which is high in protein, to feed the young bees and collecting nectar from flowers which is processed into honey. We have been very lucky to have harvested surplus honey this summer!

What does a Beekeeper do?

A beekeeper’s job is particularly busy in the spring and summer. This is because they are ensuring that the colony is healthy, giving the hive fresh comb and space. It is also a very difficult balance to ensure that the colony of bees is strong and healthy but that it doesn’t swarm. Regular checks are needed to see if they are building new queen cells – in which case they want to swarm. This would mean we would lose our ‘old’ queen and a lot of the bees. We would be left with a new queen and some bees, but the colony would be significantly weaker. Beekeepers can also intervene if they are lucky enough to catch them at the right time and manipulate them to make them think they have swarmed but still keeping all the bees! Sneaky beekeepers! So far so good – we have managed to avoid swarming.

Meet the Bees

We hope those of you lucky enough to have visited the hives this summer learnt lots about our wonderful bees. The beekeeping sessions are so popular that we have organised for some more weekend visits throughout September, before we tuck them in for the winter.

May-Half-Term-Holiday-Activity-Planner-Silver-Bay-Holiday-Village-Anglesey.-Blog.-1-1280x853.jpg

The sun has finally got his hat on, and with the May half-term quickly making its way towards us, we’ve officially launched the Silver Bay Spring Newsletter!

Jam-packed with fun and fantastic activities for all the family, there’s a tangible sense of excitement in the air as we prepare for the return of our lovely homeowners and their loved ones.

So, to make sure your calendar is chock-a-block with recreation and merry-making, take a look below.

Saving The Honey Bees

This year, we’re focusing on helping out a creature that’s been a part of the English lifestyle for as long as we can remember – the honey bee.

What many don’t realise is that this majestic being has a population that is vastly dwindling, so we’ve decided to make Silver Bay a Honey Bee Friendly Park!

Expert beekeeper, Johnathan Garratt, will be visiting over the summer months to hold important educational bee sessions with the children, and they’ll even have the chance to get up close and personal with the fuzzy, buzzy creatures. There will also be lots of bee-themed activities including candle creation with beeswax and a chance to help us build our very own Bee Hotel!

Best of all, we’ll be welcoming 20,000 new residents this summer in the form of our fuzzy friends! The protection and encouragement of the honey bees will be part of our prestigious David Bellamy award this year. Two hives are being installed closely followed by two bee colonies, so make sure you keep an eye out.

Don’t miss it… because It’ll BEE fantastic!

Welcoming Karan, our new pastry chef

We know how much our lodge owners love something sweet, and to help elevate our stunning Deck House menu to the next level, we’ve welcome talented pastry chef, Karan, to the team.

Originally from London, Karan loves baking and making sweets such as honeycomb and marshmallow, and we can’t wait to see what she brings to the table!

We’ve also got a brand new kid’s pudding menu, so keep your eyes peeled for it when you’re next dining with us.

The Chill Out Zone is here!

Silver Bay Chill Out Zone anglesey north wales

It’s very important to us to listen to our owners’ feedback and act on your wishes – which is why we’re proud to announce that we’ve launched a brand new Chill Out Zone for teens!

Complete with a pool table, television, Wii, wifi, games and comfy bean bags, it’s a space attached to the Deck House where they can kick back and relax – and one where you can rest assured that your children are close by and safe.

The Chill Out Zone also welcomes children under 12 up until 9 pm, as long as they’re supervised by someone in the Deck House.

Easter Fund Raising

You’re a generous lot, and we’re pleased to announce that the Easter raffle and quiz raised £205 pounds for Wales Air Ambulance! Thank you to everyone who donated and took part – and we’d like to give a shout out to Resting Beach Face, who were our quiz champions.

We’d also like to take a moment to highlight the fantastic charity work our team members have done too. Heidi, Will, Toni and Sue all completed a 5k race course and raised £273 for the Stroke Association. Congratulations, everyone!

The Spring Activity Schedule

If you’re a regular Silver Bay holiday-maker, you’ll know that we’re always doing our best to host lots of fun recreational activities for both children and adults. This May, there’s lots on including some brand new activities such as leaf mobiles, nail painting and tattoos, and even frisbee golf.

In the pool, we’ll be hosting a range of pastimes from adult swims to water polo and snorkelling, so make sure you pack your swimming gear!

The studio and gym have an action-packed schedule if you fancy working up a sweat. There’ll be the return of supervised activities and gym, as well as spinning, circuit training, pilates, and metafit.

Finally, our Busy Bayers activities are back with a bang! This May your little ones can experience arts and crafts, paper mache modelling, clay modelling, coasteering, woodland activities, salt dough making and much, much more. Meet-The-Team-Charlotte-The-Spa-at-Silver-Bay-min.jpg

The Spa at Silver Bay is a hub for relaxation, socialising, and a place where both lodge-owners and locals can switch off from the outside world.

Beyond the staple of the stunning 15.5 metre indoor pool, past the soothing bubbles of the warming jacuzzi and the comforting haze of the sauna and steam room, are the treatment rooms.

Delivered by our expert therapists, treatments include everything from manicures to Aromatherapy experiences. In fact, there’s something suited to every type of relaxation devotee, making it the perfect place to have some well-deserved ‘me’ time.

We have a highly-skilled team in our Spa, and Charlotte is our Senior Beauty Therapist (what she doesn’t know about Spa treatments isn’t worth knowing!) Below we’ve got an exclusive interview with her that you won’t want to miss.

Discussing everything from her top spa recommendations to an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming product of the month, Charlotte has provided us with an exciting insight into the Silver Bay Spa life.

Meet The Team - Charlotte - The Spa at Silver Bay

What is your favourite treatment that you offer at The Spa at Silver Bay?

“My favourite treatment of all time is definitely the Pro – Collagen Quartz Lift Facial, I feel amazing after it and so relaxed as you get a gorgeous hand and arm massage with it as well as a lovely scalp massage, plus my skin feels re-energised and a lot firmer.”

What treatment would you recommend for someone visiting The Spa for the first time?

“It all depends on what outcome the client would like to achieve after visiting The Spa and what kind of skin type they have. So, it would either be a full body massage or one of our ELEMIS facials.”

What made you want to become a Spa Practitioner?

“I enjoy making my clients happy and seeing results after each treatment, it’s very rewarding. And I just love my job in general.”

When is the best time to visit The Spa at Silver Bay?

“The best time to visit The Spa is in the summer when you can enjoy our beautiful views of Snowdonia while taking a dip in our swimming pool or whilst you’re in the gym or just having a coffee.”

How long do your treatments last? And what are the main benefits?

“Most of our treatments are an hour long and again it all depends on what treatment the client has had so it can be anything from relieving tension and those painful knots after a massage or it can be to achieve a youthful, less problematic looking skin.”

Do you have any sneak-peak looks at upcoming products of the month?

“So one of our *PRODUCTS OF THE MONTH* that is coming up is Pro-Definition Eye And Lip Contour Cream or as we like to call it “Botox in a bottle”. we will have an excellent offer on this so keep your eyes on our Facebook page.”

How do you find working with ELEMIS and what are the benefits of using their products?

“I love working with ELEMIS and over my 11-years of been in the industry, ELEMIS has to be the best product I have worked with as it literally does what it says, also it is a UK brand which I love even more.

And the benefits of using ELEMIS is a smoother, younger, radiant looking skin. Most of the ELEMIS products are clinically proven to give you these results and also have the ELEMIS promise which is no parabens, no sodium Laureth sulphate – SLS or SLES, no DEA, no mineral oil, no artificial colours.”

If you could provide our readers with one tip when visiting The Spa, what would it be?

“Just sit back, relax and enjoy the views.”

What does 2017 hold for The Spa at Silver Bay? Are there any new developments in the pipeline to get excited about?

“We are going on more training with ELEMIS so we will be offering a lot more body treatments which will be launching around Easter time, it’s a very exciting time for us at The Spa.”
