What a fantastic way to mark the start of summer here at Bulmer Leisure, both of our neighbouring beaches have been given accolades including the highest standard of water quality together with the no1 beach in Wales, as rated by the Sunday Times.

2021 The Sunday Times Best British Beach Guide

Of the best 50 beaches in the UK, we are very proud to announce that Lligwy beach, a short walk from our Woodland Falls Holiday Park has been rated the No1. beach in Wales. The editor notes “a stream meanders across the glittering yellow sands” and goes on to describe how he also walked a mile northwest along the dunes to the secret sands of Traeth yr Ora.

Natural Resources Wales Beach Water Quality Survey 2021

Each year Natural Resources Wales tests the water quality of the beaches around the country and recently, we’ve received some great news! We are delighted (but not surprised) to announce that both Silver Bay, Rhoscolyn beach and the beach closest to Woodland Falls Holiday Park, Lligwy have both achieved the highest standard of excellence. The report, which outlines results from the bathing water monitoring programme, supports all that we shout about these two very special beaches.

Taking care of our immediate surroundings and beaches is vital, but looking after our environment beyond is extremely important to us here at Bulmer Holiday Parks. We’re doing more to show just how much we care. Silver Bay Holiday Park, Rhsocolyn has a David Bellamy Gold Award and Woodland Falls Holiday Park, Lligwy has just taken delivery of the UK’s first eco lodge.

Not only is Silver Bay recognised for it’s water quality, but is names as one of ‘North Wales best beaches off the beaten track to escape the crowds this Summer’. Holiday park owners have direct private access to this beautiful sandy beach to enjoy the relaxing scenery and even some rock pooling.

As many of you know, crossing the Britannia Bridge is the point at which you relax and look forward to your time on Anglesey. You’ll also have noticed the little church that peeks out from the Menia side of the Strait. Church Island is home to St.Tysilio’s church. It is a beautiful and historic site that attracts visitors from all over the world, and is even still used for weddings. The church has a rich history dating back to the 6th century when it was founded by St. Tysilio, a Welsh saint and son of the King of Powys.

Next time you’re visiting Anglesey, we would highly recommend making a stop on Church Island, in Menai Strait. The secluded island can be accessed through a small causeway from Belgian Promenade (take care at high tide) and is only a 5 minute walk from a public car park.

Explore on foot

You can complete a short circular walk from Menai Bridge to Church island for magnificent views of the Menai Suspension Bridge. This 1.3km walk takes you through a woodland nature reserve and will cross over the causeway taking you round the island’s perimeter. You can get the route here! Keep an eye out for red squirrels, oystercatchers, heroins and seals!

St. Tysilio Church

The church has undergone several transformations over the centuries, with the current structure dating back to the 15th century. During the warmer months you can usually access St.Tysilio’s church during the day where you can see the original wooden trusses, stained glass windows and intricate carvings.

Whether you’re a nature lover, interested in history, or just looking to explore more of Anglesey, Church Island is a must visit destination.

To ensure you explore the best of the island we have collated routes for all abilities, long and short, on either side of the island.

Take a look below to discover the perfect walk for you, with plenty of options from both Silver Bay and Woodland Falls.

Dog Walking Routes Close to Silver Bay

Silver Bay Beach

Type: Point to point

Distance: Variable

Where: Silver Bay, 5 min walk from Silver Bay / 40 min drive from Woodland Falls

Difficulty: Easy

Car park: Not needed

As owners will know, the beautiful Silver Bay Beach is on the doorstep of their holiday home. Stroll down the private footpath where you will be greeted by the glistening sandy shores of Silver Bay. The major benefits of being a holiday home owner is that the only other car park near Silver Bay is a 20 minute walk away., giving you some exclusive access to the beach.

For a slightly longer walk, turn right before you reach the beach and travel along the coastal path. You will reach Rhoscolyn beach and further along, Trearddur Bay.

South Stack Cliffs RSPB Reserve

Type: Circular

Distance: 2.6k / 1hr 10min

Where: Trearddur / 20 min drive from Silver Bay / 40 min drive from Woodland Falls

Difficulty: Easy

Car park: Yes – RSPB Elin’s Tower Car Park, S Stack Rd, Holyhead LL65 1YH

For a walk with a view head to Trearddur and visit the South Stack Cliffs. Here you will have access up to the lighthouse for the ideal viewpoint. Be sure to look out for some puffins and guillemots as well as seals and dolphins in the waters below!

Penrhos Beach

Type: Circular

Distance: 4.5k – 1 hour

Where: Holyhead / 15 min drive from Silver Bay / 35 min drive from Woodland Falls

Difficulty: Easy

Car Park: Yes – Penrhos Beach Road Holyhead LL65 2JA

Another nearby walking route only 15 minutes away is Penrhos Beach. The white sands are especially spectacular in the summer months with waters perfect for swimming. This circular route will take you by the beach, historic ruins and woodland areas so you get the best of all terrains.

Trearddur Bay to Rhoscolyn Circular Walk

Type: Circular route

Distance: 11.3k / 2hr 30

Where: Trearddur Bay, 15 minute drive from Silver Bay / 35 min drive from Woodland Falls

Difficulty: Moderate

Car park: Yes – Trearddur Bay, Holyhead LL65 2AQ

Fancy a longer walk? This is the one for you. Take in the picturesque coastal scenery with views of Snowdonia. You’ll also pass ‘The White Eagle’ bar and restaurant where you can stop for a bite to eat. Be sure to bring your walking boots!

Dog Walking Routes Close to Woodland Falls

Red Wharf Bay

Type: Out and Back

Distance: 2.6k / 30 mins

Where: Pentraeth, 15 minute drive from Woodland Falls / 35 min drive from Silver Bay

Difficulty: Easy

Car park: Yes – Lon Y Traeth, Pentraeth LL75 8PX

Coastal paths are some of the best in Anglesey. Red Wharf Bay is a hard sand bay, making it easy under the foot. Bring your dog along and take in some of the best natural scenery Anglesey has to offer.

Lligwy beach – Traeth Lligwy

Type: Out and back

Where: Lligwy / 2 minute drive from Woodland Falls / 4min drive from Silver Bay

Distance: 7k 1hr 30min

Difficulty: Easy

Car park: Yes – Traeth Lligwy, Moelfre LL72 8NN

The award-winning Lligwy beach has been voted one of the best in the UK. Its unspoiled shore makes it a must visit during your stays with us at Woodland Falls. Take in the peaceful surroundings and stroll along from Moelfre to Lligwy beach and back.

Benllech Circular

Type: Circular route

Distance: 9.8k / 2 hrs 10 mins

Where: Pentraeth / 15 minute drive from Woodland Falls / 40 min drive from Silver Bay

Difficulty: Easy

Car park: Yes – Pentraeth LL75 8HJ

Usually a very quiet route, Benllech circular walk provides some incredible views out to sea. This route will take you by Traeth Coch, Red Wharf Bay, Castell Mawr Rock and Benllech. Whilst the terrain is mainly easy there are some tougher parts so appropriate footwear is advised.

Amlwch to Cemaes

Type: Point to point

Distance: 12.7k / 3hrs

Where: Maes Parcio Pothladd Amlwch / 10 min drive from Woodland Falls / 39 min drive from Silver Bay

Difficulty: Difficult

Car park: Yes – Quay St, Amlwch LL68 9HD

This longer 12.7 route is one for owners of bigger dogs looking for a good stretch. Not to worry though, this route is mostly flat and there are places for refreshments at both ends of the trail! We recommend this walk because of the combination of green countryside and the fresh sea air with accompanying views. Making it a treat for the eyes.

Anglesey has plenty of cycling routes to choose from, with a range of coastal, forest and mountain views.

So that you can continue to enjoy the stunning scenery of Anglesey in the winter months, we’ve put together some cycling routes more suited for the wetter weather. That way, when you inevitably get caught in the rain, it won’t ruin your cycle.

Newborough Forest Drive – Cycle Route Loop from Niwbwrch

Level – Easy

Distance – 10.4 miles

Climb – 350 ft

Parking / transport – Begins and ends next to a car park

If you’re on the search for a route suitable for the whole family, this cycle loop is for you.

Starting with a one mile slightly sandy path, the rest of the route takes a paved forest route avoiding muddy swamps!

Bridge View (Afon Cefni) – Bike path along the Cob Pool Loop from Bodffordd

Level – Intermediate

Distance – 28 miles

Climb – 500 ft

Parking / transport – Begins and ends at a car park

For a slightly more challenging route, we suggest this loop taking you around Anglesey past a river, through newborough forest, and along Traeth Llanddwyn beach. With it being easily accessible by car, this is a must try cycling route this winter.

St. Cybi’s Church – RAF viewing area Loop from Rhosneigr

Level – Intermediate

Distance – 33.4 miles

Climb – 850 ft

Parking / transport – Begins and ends at a train station

Another popular cycling route taking you past an RAF viewing point is this loop. Mostly on paved paths, this is a great choice for those rainier days.

Llanberis Pass – Menai Suspension Bridge Loop from Llanfairpwll

Level – Difficult

Distance – 47.5 miles

Climb – 3,875 ft

Parking / transport – Begins and ends at a train station

Lastly, for the cycling pros who will go the extra mile for a spectacular view, this ones for you. This cycling loop will take you through some incredible mountain valleys, glacial features, and across the menai suspension bridge.

You can also enjoy a well needed coffee (or shelter from the rain) at Ogwen Valley visitors centre and snack bar at 33 miles.

Over the past few years, there have been a lot of conversations about environmentally friendly and sustainable technologies. The combination of ever-increasing energy prices and the fear of overusing fossil fuels to generate power has led more people to look for ecologically sustainable alternatives for energy sources.

That’s why we’re proud to announce that Woodland Falls is the first holiday park in the UK to offer eco-friendly holiday homes fully equipped with solar panels and heat pumps. These upgraded lodges will be available for purchase at our brand new holiday park Woodland Falls Lligwy shortly. Not only does this allow the chance to cut your carbon footprint, you’ll also enjoy reduce bills and outgoings.

How does it work?

Solar panels are usually placed on the roof of your holiday home, ideally in a location that gets the maximum sunlight throughout the day. These panels absorb the light and convert that energy into electricity to power the home and also heat up the water tank.

A common misconception about solar panels is that they only work properly if they are exposed to long periods of uninterrupted sunshine. We can confidently tell you that that is simply not true, even on cloudy days the panels can generate enough energy to produce electricity and hot water for all guests to enjoy.

Why should you invest in an eco-friendly holiday home?

Solar panels and heat pumps can reduce carbon emissions by up to 73%, equating to a saving of up to 511 tones of carbon emissions per year. Solar panels are a great investment for your holiday homes as they reduce the cost of electricity meaning you don’t have to worry about how much energy you use while you’re away. After your panels are installed the only thing you will notice is the savings you will be making. Unlike generators, solar panels create no noise pollution, so you don’t have to worry about an annoying buzzing sound ruining your holiday. Welcome back to Silver Bay, what a year it has been! Now it’s time to relax, unwind and breathe in that fresh Anglesey air. Did you know that Silver Bay offers relaxation for the whole family? While the adults are enjoying a rejuvenating trip to the spa, the children can have fun with our Busy Bayers Children’s Activities. This offers a wide range of entertainment for the little ones during the school holidays from indoor creativity to outdoor adventures, there’s something for every child!

If you’re looking for a more buzzing activity, look no further than “Meet the Bees”. Yes, the bees are back from their sheltered winter quarters and are raring to get back the flowers at Silver Bay to produce that delicious organic honey. Make sure you come along to one of the “Meet the Bees” activities to find out how they’re doing!

Wondering what you can expect from “Meet the Bees”? A trip to the Bee Hotel is a guaranteed unique and unbeelievable experience. You can expect to be provided with specialist beekeeping protection, gain knowledge from expert beekeeper Johnathan Garratt and have the opportunity to get up close and personal with those furry, little friends. On those extra sunny days you can keep an eye for those honeybees – these bees will be working extra hard to collect resources for the colony. Pro-tip: stand close to the brightest flowers and you’ll see the bees collecting the sweet nectar.

While lockdown took over the world, there has been no rest for the beekeepers who have been working extra hard to make sure that the colony has been kept safe. Find out more information from beekeeper Johnathan about what you can do to help protect the bees.

We are proud to announce we have once again received a David Bellamy Conservation Award for our commitment to the environment and wildlife in Anglesey. Professor Bellamy has awarded Silver Bay Holiday Village the Gold accolade as well as the Woodlands Badge and we are now proud to call ourselves a Honey Bee Friendly Park.

But what did we do to earn this accolade? Keep reading to find out more.

What is the David Bellamy Conservation Award?

David Bellamy Conservation Awards

The David Bellamy Conservation Award Scheme is one of the longest running green tourism awards in the UK with the first awards being made in 1997.

All parks are regularly assessed by local wildlife experts to look at the steps they are taking to:

Manage the land as a haven for wildlife
Reduce the use of energy, water and other resources
Reduce, reuse and recycle waste
Support the local community

Three levels of excellence can be achieved and we’re thrilled to have been awarded the gold accolade. Parks in the list range from peaceful getaways to larger leisure parks but you can rest assured that your park is committed to environmental excellence and be safe in the knowledge that you made the greener choice.

Here’s how we earned the gold accolade:

Supporting and working with the local community

All our staff are local and some are recruited from Môn CF, which is a charity that provides opportunities for people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Supporting and working with local/national charities

Earlier this year we became a member of the North Wales Wildlife Trust and RSPB and continue to support local charities. We’re also members of the National Trust and Red Squirrel Trust.

Energy conservation

All our main buildings are well insulated and double glazed and all our staff receive training in energy conservation. We also use LED lights throughout the park and turn them off between 1am and 7am. We have two electric buggies on site and also have two electric vehicle charging points on site. Also, we recently introduced battery powered strimmers and chainsaws which we have found to be quieter as well as using no fossil fuels.

Reuse, reduce, recycle

We make some of our outdoor furniture and decking from recycled plastic. We also have a freecycling policy if any of our owners are looking to get rid of old furniture.

Wildlife and environment activities

We’re proud to offer all sorts of activities for children during the school holidays, including woodland and gardening activities.

Food and shelter

Our park has plenty of natural habitat providing plenty of food and shelter for local wildlife. Plus we have bird feeders, bee hives, bug hotels and toad homes.

How do you become a Honey Bee Friendly Park?

Jonathan the beekeeper

In 2016, the David Bellamy Conservation Award Scheme teamed up with the British Beekeepers Association to run the Honey Bee Friendly Park Project. The aim was to get as many parks as possible to conserve Britain’s bees.

Parks that take part in the scheme commit to planting forage crops that bees need to survive, spreading the word about the importance of bee conservation, and working to give bees a home.

With the help of our beekeeper, Jonathan, we established a bee hotel on the park to create a place for our local bees to live and work. Jonathan makes sure that the colony is strong and healthy but also makes sure that it doesn’t swarm.

We also hold ‘Meet the Bees’ sessions during school holidays so our holiday home owners have the chance to meet them and learn more about them. Plus, if it’s been a particularly fruitful year, we’re able to harvest some of the honey and sell it to the public from our reception area

We are thrilled to announce that we received a Green Coast Award by Keep Wales Tidy.

The Green Coast Award recognises the beautiful, untouched and rugged beaches for their excellent water quality and unspoiled environment. Unlike the beaches that have received a Blue Flag Award, a Green Coast Award beach doesn’t have the infrastructure and intensive management generally associated with the more traditional seaside resort.

In order to receive the Green Coast Award the beach must comply with the following criteria:

Have excellent water quality
Encourage dog and horse owners to clean up after their animals by providing suitable facilities and literature
Have a guardianship scheme in place
Provide information on locally organised environmental activities
Public access to the beach must be safe and well maintained

Wales has some of the most beautiful and well managed beaches in the world. The Wales Coast Awards help to raise environmental awareness, recognise good practice and promote Wales as an international destination.

18 beaches in Wales received the Green Coast Award this year, recognising all the hidden gems on our coastline. The award helps to encourage people to “adopt” areas of the coast. This helps contribute towards the sustainability of the area while promoting volunteering. We are also the first private business to apply for a coast award on behalf of a beach.

The local contribution is evident in recent news with Anglesey announced as the UK’s first Plastic Free Community. This was decided by the marine conservation charity, Surfers Against Sewage.

What other environmental initiatives are we involved in?

Obeewan Silver Bay beekeeper

Our dedication to preserving the natural environment and supporting British wildlife is a priority for us. We also received the David Bellamy Gold Award for our commitment to protecting the local wildlife, reducing energy use, recycling waste, and supporting the local community. As part of our commitment to the rural environment and the impact of the coastal path, we have also started to plant indigenous species to reestablish the flora and fauna.

And not forgetting our honey bees. The bees are still in their winter home at the moment but will be moving back this month. They were very busy during the warm spell in April; so much so that we had to hire an extra pair of hands (or paws). We also made up some extra frames in anticipation but Obeewan was too busy eating all the honey so our beekeeper, Jonathan, had to do it all by himself. Starting in the May half term holidays, we will be offering ‘Meet the Bees’ sessions throughout the summer so our owners can have the opportunity to meet the queen and her workers.

Silver Bay Holiday Village are now members of the National Trust, Wildlife Trust, RSPB and Red Squirrel Trust. We have also, once again, been awarded the David Bellamy Gold Award. We are very proud of this achievement and it further strengthens our commitment to conserving the local area and wildlife. Read on to find out about each membership and what this means for Silver Bay and our owners and visitors.

National Trust and Wildlife Trust

As a member of the National Trust we aim to help the organisation achieve its aims of giving everyone access to Britain’s beautiful landscapes and spectacular coastlines whilst helping to take care of it. Similarly, our membership with the Wildlife Trust will help support the preservation of wildlife and wild places in the local area as well as helping our owners get closer to nature.

RSPB

Silver Bay and the local area is home to a multitude of bird species, from puffins to sparrow-hawks, so it’s no surprise that we’re a member of the RSPB. With species numbers declining dramatically in recent years, we’ll be working with the RSPB to help their recovery.

Red Squirrel Trust

Another animal that is at risk in our local area is the red squirrel. Earlier this month we had a visit from Holly, our Red Squirrel Ranger from the Red Squirrel Trust, and we are over the moon to hear that there is evidence of red squirrel activity in our woodland area. Holly will be popping back to check on the activity so we’ll make sure to keep you updated. Why not take a walk and see if you can spot one yourself?

David Bellamy Award

Last but not least, we’re happy to announce that we have once again being awarded the David Bellamy Gold Award. This award recognises our commitment to protecting the local wildlife, reducing our energy use, recycling our waste, and supporting the local community.
