If you’re coming to Anglesey on holiday, you’re probably a bit of an outdoor enthusiast. And if not you’ll certainly be one once you’ve seen our gorgeous natural beauty!

And one of the best ways to explore our beautiful nature is to hop on a bike and get cycling.

It’s a great holiday activity for all the family, allowing you to keep fit and also have fun whilst exploring what our island has to offer.

So for our top recommendations when it comes to exploring Anglesey by bike, take a look below!

The best Anglesey bike ride routes

Because our island is filled with awe-inspiring beauty, you’ll often find large groups of people getting together and cycling! And these are the best routes to take when you’re in the area.

Circular Route around Anglesey

As we are an island, one of the most popular cycle routes is to bike around the island in a circle. This usually takes around 6 hours, so it’s not one for the beginner cyclist, but it can certainly be a pleasant experience if you’re an avid cycler.

It’s just over 58 miles in total, and if you think this could be the cycle route for you be sure to take a look here for some further information.

Lôn Las Cefni

If you’re looking for a cycle route that is full of stunning nature, then this could be perfect for you. This amazing cycling journey is eleven miles in total, and is thought of to be an easy to medium cycling path in terms of difficulty.

You’ll also find a distinct lack of traffic on the roads this route takes, making it a safe cycling path too.

The path begins at Malltraeth and ends at Cefni Reservoir – so if you’re looking for a lovely cycling day out then this could be perfect.

Take a look here to find out more about the route and explore some other popular cycling options in the area.

Llyn Coron Loop

If you’re intrigued by the idea of a cycle path that’s a loop, then keep reading. The whole of the island may be too much for those not used to cycling, and this alternative is ideal.

The Llyn Coron Loop lasts 14 miles in total and it’s one to follow if you’re hoping to gain access to some really gorgeous views of Anglesey.

There’s more about the route here, including specific points to look out for along your route as well as interesting locations nearby.

Holyhead to Caergeiliog

If you’re looking for a shorter route then a cycle between Holyhead and Caergeiliog could be perfect.

This route takes around 25 minutes to complete, and it’s just below five miles in distance. Please do remember you’ll have to cycle back again – so your route could take an hour in total.

Take a look here for some more information, including sites and restaurants to visit along your way!

Llynnon Mill via Church Bay Westerly

The first thing to do on this route is journey to LLynnon Mill, and from here you’ll be able to begin another circular bike route.

The great thing about this cycling path is that sometimes you’ll be able to explore the gorgeous coast and sometimes you will also be inland too – ensuring you get the best of both worlds!

It’s also recommended that you do this route anti-clockwise, simply because there is quite a steep hill along route.

Find out more details about it right here.

If you’d like to plan your own cycle route, be sure to take a look at this website here. You’ll be able to put in your postcode to work out the best way to go.

Top tips for cycling with all the family

silver bay holiday village anglesey cycling bikes

If you take your family cycling with you, then there are a few key things to bring with you and consider before you head out.

  1. Make sure everyone in your party is confident on a bike. You don’t want to get half way around a loop only for your someone to insist they can’t go on anymore! Think about which route would be best suited to all of your group before heading out for a day of cycling activity!

  2. Another important aspect of any cycling trip is to choose a bike you’re comfortable on. You want one that’s perfectly suited to you, because if you head out on a long cycling journey you don’t want to be uncomfortable. Make sure the seat is the right height and that you can sit on it for a while!

  3. If you’re going to head out with your family, it’s always best to ensure they’re kitted out with safety gear. Picking helmets that are bright colours is also a good choice to help traffic know that you’re on cycling in the area.

  4. It’s also a good idea to ensure you have water and food on hand, perhaps in a backpack. From there you’ll be able to have refreshing breaks when you need them during your journey!

Usually, when we go on holiday we find ourselves holding our breath and constantly checking our weather apps to see what we can expect on our break. And although some people find the prospect of rain when they go away off-putting, this doesn’t have to be the case at all when you’re on holiday on Anglesey!

Below we’ve come up with a range of exciting ways to keep the whole family entertained on and off our Welsh holiday park, and we think you’ll love them.

So if your weather app is predicting rain, there’s no need to worry. Here at Silver Bay we’ve got your covered!

Things to do on a rainy day whilst you’re on holiday

Fun indoors

One of the easiest things to do when it’s raining is to stay indoors, but when you’re the proud owner of a holiday lodge at Silver Bay, even a day inside is going to be fun and luxurious!

Because each and every one of our lodges is complete with gorgeous decor and fantastic amounts of space for the whole family, you can be sure you won’t be falling over one another. And with all this space there’s plenty you can do.

Rain gives your family time to bond together without the distraction of the outdoors. Sit down and play a board game, or perhaps gather together some tasty snacks and watch a film whilst you’re all snuggled on the sofa. Rainy days are also the perfect opportunity to bake together or maybe do a bit of family crafting. Time indoors is a great opportunity to embrace creative activities with the family.

There are plenty of fun things to do when the weather outside has let you down – so turn that frown upside down and begin planning the best rainy day on holiday you’ve ever had!

Fun on Silver Bay Holiday Park

Here at Silver Bay, we’re proud to be able to offer our lodge owners some amazing amenities on site, and these make for great places to visit when the weather’s a little dull.

A rainy day is the perfect excuse to relax in our fantastic spa. We have a range of treatment rooms available, as well as a wonderful swimming pool and jacuzzi. We also have a state-of-art gym available so you can still stretch your legs even if you can’t get outdoors.

As well as this, we have a range of kids club activities for all ages that can still take place. During the school holidays, we have everything on offer from pizza making classes through to supervised fitness and pool activities! There’s even a range of activities on offer for adults including spinning and aerobics!

And, of course, the rain doesn’t mean we have to postpone our parties! We love a get-together in The Hay House here at Silver Bay, and we encourage all our holiday lodge owners to come together and have a fantastic time come rain or shine.

So the next time you feel disappointment when it comes to holiday weather, push it to one side and have an amazing time anyway!

Activities off site for a rainy day

silver bay holiday village anglesey rain wellingtons umbrella

Of course, rain doesn’t mean you can’t venture off site and have a fun day exploring the wonderful indoor activities of Anglesey.

That’s what’s so great about this area – there’s plenty to do no matter what the sky’s doing!

But which are the best attractions to visit?

You guessed it, we’re here to help once more and point you in the right direction.

Beaumaris Gaol

Dating right back to 1829, this jail is from the Victorian era and makes for an excellent rainy day attraction on the Isle of Anglesey.

The rain only adds to the atmospheric jail experience and the drama you’ll feel when visiting the attraction makes it a very interesting afternoon out indeed.

At the prison you’ll find the UK’s only original tread wheel located in its original place, and as well as this you can expect to find the gallows in place on the outer wall!

The building itself is on the large side, and you can experience everything from the dingy corridors through to the spooky jail cells. There’s also a punishment cell available to view – and it really is spooky.

There were two hangings that took place at the prison, as well as one escape attempt that resulted in the prisoner breaking his leg and being recaptured a short while later.

Transport yourself back in time and experience the eerie prison atmosphere for yourself! A great day out for all the family.

Holyhead Maritime Museum

As we’re an island, it’s unsurprising that another one the amazing attractions nearby is the maritime museum.

This attraction is to be found within what’s believed to be the oldest lifeboat station in Wales, and you’ll find plenty to see on your visit.

Located on Newry beach, the museum tells tales of pirates, shipwrecks and much more. There are also plenty of exhibits that you can get up close and personal with, and discover model ships and lifeboat operators that have saved many lives on the Anglesey waters.

There’s also a special section dedicated to what it was like during the war in the area – and there’s even an air raid siren that you could get the chance to ring for yourself!

Make this your rainy day choice if you want to step back in time and experience what the maritime era was like, and is like right now, on Anglesey.

Pili Palas

For those who adore the chance to experience British local wildlife, Pili Palas could be the perfect rainy day choice for you and your family.

Here you’ll be surrounded by gorgeous butterflies and awe-inspiring waterfalls, and there are even snakes and lizards about too that you might get the chance to hold if you visit during one of the hands-on sessions!

They also have a special bug zone, where you can find all sorts of creepy crawlies from cockroaches through to snails, and after that the tropical room is home to scorpions, toads and much more. There’s even a delightful pet’s corner that’s sure to put a smile on your face!

And now Pili Palas is the proud home of four delightful meerkats – and everyone loves those. There’s also an adventure playground and an indoor play area perfect to keep kids of all ages entertained.

Perfect for rainy day fun, Pili Palas won’t let you down. Prices start for £7.25 for children, and it’s free for those under the age of three!

Anglesey Sea Zoo

Another attraction for wildlife lovers, Anglesey Sea Zoo is an ideal slice of rainy day entertainment.

Filled with an array of underwater creatures, the Sea Zoo is home to more than 150 species. On a daily visit, you’ll find live feeds as well as talks to educate you on all there is to know about the wildlife around you. There’s even a chance to take a virtual scuba dive which is sure to be an experience to remember!

The Sea Zoo is also home to conservation programs for Lobsters, Seahorses and also Dolphin Rescue.

Prices start at £6.75 for children and £7.75 for adults. You can even choose your own pearl oyster and get access to a beautiful pearl for someone special in the amazing shop if you so wish!

Anglesey Transport and Agricultural Museum

Our final rainy day recommendation is the Anglesey Transport and Agricultural Museum. You may have seen this attraction on television, as it’s featured on shows such as ITV’s ‘A Great Welsh Adventure’ and many more.

There’s a museum and cafe on site and it’s the perfect place to seek indoor entertainment whilst taking refuge from the rain! There are more than 100 vehicles dating from the 1920s onwards, and the museum itself benefits from the glorious decor of a cobbled 1940s street.

It really is a delight to see, and it’s a fun place to visit for people of all ages. There are motorbikes, cars, military vehicles and more – and some of them have even been used in television shows and movies!

Don’t miss out on this indoor attraction that’s sure to entertain everyone in your travel party.

So if you want to get the family together this Sunday and bond over the goodness of meat, vegetables and potatoes drenched in rich gravy, this is the blog for you.

1. The Hay House Bistro at Silver Bay Holiday Village

2. The Lobster Pot

If you fancy heading out for the evening away from the park, we recommend you take a visit to The Lobster Pot on Anglesey for a tasty Sunday lunch.

They host a special 3-course menu on Sunday, and you get to pick from starters such as homemade soup, chicken liver pate and spicy crab cakes. There’s also a vegetarian choice of samosas and spring rolls – ensuring everyone is catered to.

With the main, you can expect classics such as mashed and roast potatoes, gravy and a crisp yet soft Yorkshire pudding. There are five meats to choose from including pork, duckling and even salmon if you’re feeling like something a little adventurous. There’s even lobster on offer if you want a Sunday roast with a twist!

3. The Black Lion Inn

silver bay holiday village anglesey roast dinner recommendations

Image sourced from Google Local

Pubs tend to do an amazing roast dinner. Whether it’s the rustic surroundings that make it that little bit more special, or just a sprinkling of pub grub fun – roast dinners at The Black Lion Inn are exceptional!

There’s an extra special Sunday lunch menu on offer here, and there are a range of starters included breaded brie and pork belly to get your tastebuds tingling for the main event.

The meats on offer with your main meal include a gorgeous stuffed roast loin of pork, as well as shorthorn beef and other options including salmon. There’s also a vegetarian main of slow roasted courgette with creamed leeks and toasted walnuts – making sure every type of eater is left satisfied after Sunday lunch at this establishment.

There’s also a range of tantalising treats we recommend you indulge in to round off your meal. Sticky toffee pudding, apple and blackberry crumble and a cheese board are just a few tempting sweets you can choose from.

4. Trearddur Bay Hotel

What we really love about the Trearddur Bay Hotel is the extensive menu they have on offer. This is changed seasonally, with both spring and winter menus around. Yet it’s the traditional roast dinner that catches our rumbling stomachs here once again.

There isn’t just one meat on your plate at this restaurant, and there isn’t two either. There are THREE meats on this dish, and this is matched perfectly alongside Yorkshire puddings, roasties, veggies and even cauliflower cheese!

You can round this gorgeous roast dinner dream with a heavenly dessert. Whether you’re lemon cheesecake kind of person, or perhaps fancy going out and indulging in the American classic Knickerbocker Glory, there’ll be something on offer here for you to satisfy your Sunday sweet tooth.

5. Harry’s Bistro

Our final entry on the list comes from Harry’s Bistro in Beaumaris. This establishment is only open between 12-2pm on a Sunday, but it’s more than worth a visit indeed!

They have a special Sunday menu that tends to change, so if you want the most up to date information it’s best to give them a call. But it’s a fantastic place that will see the likes of rarebit Welsh tartlet or tempura king prawns as a starter (there’s usually a choice of a few!), followed closely by Welsh beef or lamb, cod, poached eggs and also roasted chicken – most of which benefit from roast potatoes and a selection of scrummy fresh vegetables.

For dessert, imagine the likes of apricot crumble, fresh fruit pavlova, a cheeseboard and much more. You won’t be disappointed with a visit to Harry’s Bistro for a relaxing, scrumptious roast dinner.

One of the most romantic and magical days of the year is fast approaching – St. Valentine’s day is the perfect opportunity to propose to the one you love.

So why not do something extra special for the day of love this 2016, and make this the year you finally pop the big question to your loved one?

Proposing to your girlfriend, or boyfriend, is one of the biggest and most exciting journeys you’ll take on together and sets the pace for a life-long partnership. But before you do it, there are a few key things you need to consider.

One of the most important parts of any proposal is the location – and we’re yet to come across a place more strikingly beautiful than our very own shores of Anglesey, North Wales.

So if you want somewhere to create that picture-perfect moment, be sure to have a glance below and discover some of the most romantic and beautiful places our little island has to offer.

South Stack Cliffs

For a proposal location with magnificent views over the Irish Sea, the South Stack Cliffs are the ideal place to get down on one knee and make your partner happy!

The views of the ocean and the wonderful lighthouse will ensure this romantic moment will be set in your memories forever.

And it makes for the perfect place to get a picture-perfect proposal photo together, too!

The Harbourfront Bistro

If you’re looking for a more traditional place to propose, then a restaurant proposal could be the place for you. What we like about these proposals is that they offer the perfect place to relax, whilst also allowing you to make your loved one feel extra special for others to see.

There are a few amazing venues on Anglesey perfect for this, but one of the best is the Harbourfront Bistro. Outside they have an amazing decking area looking over the ocean that’s sure to take your partner’s breath away. Perfect to make them feel like they’re on top of the world on their engagement day!

Silver Bay Beach

We head back outdoors again for our next recommendation and straight to our very own Silver Bay Beach.

Our award-winning coastline is beautiful and brimming with atmosphere to set the scene for a nerve-tingling romantic moment. So whilst the stunning blue waters lap upon our award-winning soft and inviting shores, why not take advantage of the beautiful natural surroundings to provide the backdrop for one life’s most memorable moments.

After that, you can spend the afternoon on the beach planning the dreamy future that lies ahead for the two of you. Our recommendation, take a champagne picnic along for the moment too…

Beaumaris Castle

If you’d like to incorporate some history into your big moment, then a proposal at the iconic Beaumaris Castle could be the ideal place to pop the question.

Being surrounded by the beautiful, historic scenery is sure to make your proposal feel as grand as possible – and it’ll certainly make your partner feel like a king or queen – whatever takes their fancy!

You can then enjoy an afternoon out at the castle too, so everyone wins!

Anglesey Sea Zoo

For a proposal that’s a little different, the Anglesey Sea Zoo is an exciting alternative to traditional proposal spots.

If you’re the couple that’s a little unique, then why not take your loved one down to the sea zoo and propose surrounded by underwater friends?

It’s sure to be the last thing they expect at this attraction! But it’s also the perfect place to do something a little different with your proposal.

The Dingle Nature Reserve

If you’re the outdoorsy type, and have always dreamt of proposing amongst nature’s finest, then look no further than the majestic Dingle Nature Reserve.

This slice of natural paradise on Anglesey is a place where your love can flourish, and you’ll certainly get some privacy if you venture down here.

So if you’re a private couple that wants your proposal to be about you, and only you, then the Dingle Nature Reserve is the perfect place to get down on one knee.

Red Wharf Bay

You don’t need to go abroad to find a magnificent beach, and although we’ve already touched on Silver Bay Beach, Red Wharf Bay is another beautiful place to get down on one knee.

Why not take your loved one for a romantic beach stroll before getting your ring out and making their day?

If you get the weather right too, it could be a truly spectacular moment for the two of you!

Another local restaurant perfect for proposing is Dylan’s. Located near Menai Bridge and home to some inspiring views of the Menai Straits from their romantic balcony, Dylan’s makes for a very romantic place indeed.

Enjoy some tantalising food and celebrate with some bubbly with your new fiancé(e) at Dylan’s!

It’s sure to provide you both with a proposal to remember.

Plas Newydd Country House and Gardens

If you want to give your loved one a proposal surrounded by grandeur, then the Plas Newydd Country House is the ideal place to whisk them away on a romantic adventure.

Whether you want to propose in one of the beautiful, regal rooms, or perhaps would like to get lost together in the wonderful gardens, Plas Newydd offers a truely spectacular place where the two of you can experience something you’ll remember for the rest of your lives.

Don’t settle for less than your fiancé(e) deserves and begin your future together at Plas Newydd!

So there you have it, our guide to proposing on our magnificent island. We hope you feel inspired to make 2016 a special year for you and your partner. Good luck!

Discover with our blog the best things to see and do, and the reasons why Anglesey is one of the best UK destinations around.

1. The coastline

Anglesey truly has some amazing, unspoiled coastline – and it’s one of our main attractions.

Amazing to walk, beach comb, and even swim in if the weather is right, Anglesey is a breath fresh, salty, sea air! Make the beach one of the focal points of your visit to the area and prepare for sandy toes and the taste of a salty, sea breeze.

One of the best beaches in the area is, of course, Silver Bay Beach – and we’ve got the award to prove it. We recently won the prestigious Green Coast Award that you can read more about here. We’re incredibly proud of this achievement, and we are glad our beach is a credit to the Anglesey shoreline overall.

2. The food

Anglesey is also home to some amazing restaurants, and we can’t recommend a visit enough to the ones that use local produce in their dishes. Of course, the onsite restaurant at Silver Bay features some amazing dishes that uses the finest of locally sourced ingredients.

But other favourites in the area include Dylans, The Harbour Front Bistro and also The Marram Grass Cafe.

If you’d like to discover more about these amazing eateries, be sure to take a look at the first and second part of our Anglesey’s best restaurants guides. We cover some of the finest in the area so you’ll have plenty of choice!

3. The nature

As well as being home to some beautiful coastline, Anglesey also has masses of countryside that are sure to take your breath away.

4. The peace and quiet

We know how busy everyday life has become, and with people constantly switched on and staring at their smartphones, it can be hard to ever truly switch off. Yet Anglesey makes it that little bit easier.

As soon as you drive over the Menai bridge and head onto our little Island, you’ll notice that there’s a quieter, slow place of life here that will help you achieve ultimate relaxation.

Placing your phone down and taking the time to appreciate the soothing Anglesey air is sure to have you relaxing in no time – we know it does for us!

5. There’s always something to do

Whether you’re visiting the local attractions or hanging out on one of the many beaches, Anglesey is a place where there’s always something to do.

From a fun day at the beach through to the enthralling history at Beaumaris Castle, you’ll always be able to entertain the family at the ultimate UK destination.

Whether you fancy powerboating, sailing, or something else entirely – there will be a watersport for you that you’re sure to love.

So don’t leave them behind and make it a holiday that everyone in your household is welcome on and sure to remember! We’re sure your four-legged friend will thank you for it!

10. It’s close to home

One of the best things about Anglesey is that it’s close to home, especially if you live in northern UK.

All you need to do is pack the family up, jump in the car and then drive a couple of hours before arriving at a tranquil destination that’ll help you switch off from the worries and strife of life.

There’s plenty of exciting events going on, festive and otherwise too, so we’re sure there’ll be something of interest for you if you choose to head to Anglesey this winter.

Take a look below for our top recommendations for a winter break to remember!

Local Farmer’s Market

Despite the cold weather, the Farmer’s Market that takes place throughout the year continues during the Christmas period.

At the market you’ll find a range of fantastic local produce that are both fresh and tasty. So why not support local trade this Christmas?

The market is hosted at Menai bridge and runs on the 3rd Saturday of every month. This continues right up until the 19th of December, so don’t miss out if you’re looking for a wonderful Anglesey market to visit.

Winter Treasures Craft Fair

If you adore crafts and treasures, then you must visit the Winter Treasures Craft Fair in Anglesey this winter.

The fair is running from the 14th of November until the 24th of December. Inside you’ll get access to some wonderful Welsh made items that make perfect souvenirs or presents.

The fair is located at Oriel Ynys Mon, which is about a thirty minute drive from Silver Bay. It’s also open from 10:30am to 5pm every single day making it the perfect place to visit no matter what day it is.

At the fair you’ll be able to purchase everything from gifts through to decorations, so make sure you visit for an extra special festive and fun time!

Visit the Holyhead Maritime Museum

If you’re hoping to escape the cold by venturing indoors then we highly recommend a visit to the Holyhead Maritime Museum.

Home to the oldest lifeboat station in Wales, the Maritime Museum is a fantastic day out for people of all ages.

If you’d like to find out more about the museum you can watch their short promotional video here. Yet we have to say, if you’re looking for a place to visit that’s both educational and entertaining, you won’t go wrong with the Holyhead Maritime Museum.

Anglesey Shopping

We all tend to spend a lot during the festive period, so to make sure you get the right presents for your loved ones you simply must explore Anglesey’s shopping attractions.

Here in Anglesey we like to focus on local trade, and if you decide to visit the likes of Beaumaris, Rhosneigr and Menai Bridge you’ll find a range of independent shops available. Each one will be brimming with unique gift ideas and extra special presents that could really make someone’s Christmas.

For shopping with a difference and an escape from the high street stores, Anglesey is the perfect place this festive season.
