‘Life’s a beach’.. Just one of the many benefits that come with becoming a holiday home owner at Silver Bay is you will have one of the very best beaches in North Wales literally right on your doorstep.

You don’t just have to take our word for it, Silver Bay beach, also known as Traeth Llydan beach in Rhoscolyn, has received a Green Coast Award from Keep Wales Tidy. It is one of just 14 beaches across the country to have achieved this accolade.

The Green Coast Award is a status which is reserved for beaches which are considered to be “hidden gems” here on the beautiful Welsh coastline. Beaches which receive this award are assessed as having “excellent water quality” and an “unspoiled environment”.

What makes Silver Bay beach even more exceptional is the fact that it has also been awarded the David Bellamy Conversation Gold Award. This is thanks to our efforts to protect the local wildlife, dunes and general environment.

Holiday Home Ownership Perks

As a holiday home owner at Silver Bay, you will enjoy having direct footpath access to this public beach whenever you visit your home away from home. ..

The recognised quality of the water and cleanliness of the beach truly makes it one of the best swimming and surfing beaches in North Wales. Having your holiday home so close means that you and your family can experience all of these activities as well as a boat launch and recovery service without leaving the park. Simply take the short jaunt from your holiday home for a lazy day on the beach or enjoy many of our organised children’s activities including coasteering, surfing or kayaking.

If you bring your pooch along with you on your break, then you will be pleased to hear that Silver Bay beach is one of the few dog friendly beaches in Wales which permits access to four legged companions throughout the year.

Never Ending Beach Holidays in Wales

We strive to really create a truly beautiful Welsh beach holiday vibe here at Silver Bay Holiday Park. One of the key ways that we achieve this is via our on-site beach services which provides refreshments throughout the Summer season.

You can grab a drink or an ice cream or even order a bite to eat. If a quick snack won’t be enough to quell those hunger pangs, then you can order something a little more substantial like a fresh stone oven baked pizza. You will certainly deserve it after your day on the beach or boating in the crystal clear waters here at Traeth Llydan beach.

Silver Bay Holiday Village is situated on Holy Island, located just off the western edge of the Isle of Anglesey. Yes, you read that correctly, this is an island off the coast of another island! Covering an area of only 15 square miles, Holy Island might be small but it certainly packs a punch with coastlines full of tiny coves, sweeping bays and stunning headlands. There’s so much to explore on this gorgeous island.

Porth Dafarch

Porthdafarch Rd, Holyhead LL65 2LS

20 minute drive from Silver Bay

Porth Dafarch is a picturesque cove located over a mile south-west of Holyhead on Holy Island. Perfect for families, Porth Dafarch’s sandy beach is nicely sheltered below rugged headlands making it ideal for safe paddling and swimming. It’s an extremely popular beach for water sports including canoeing, surfing and coasteering and scuba diving.

This beach is owned by the National Trust and is just one of 6 beaches on Anglesey to have a Blue Flag status for its water quality and cleanliness. In fact, during high season this beach is cleaned every morning. For all our dog owners, please note that this beach has a dog ban between May 1st and September 30th. A Beach Warden is on duty during late May and early September to enforce this rule.

Trearddur Bay Beach

Trearddur Bay, Holyhead LL65 2UL

14 minute drive from Silver Bay

This popular wide sandy beach is located about 2 miles south of Holyhead. Scuba diving and sailing are popular activities at Trearddur Bay when conditions are good this beach is also popular for surfing. If you’re not into watersports don’t worry, this beach is also popular for fishing so you can still enjoy the water.

There are two incredible restaurants located by this beach Waterfront Restaurant and The Sea Shanty Bar/Restaurant so there’s plenty of options for food during your trip. Please note that dog restrictions apply on the southern half of the beach between May 1st and September 30th with Beach Wardens on duty.

Porth Castell and Porth Diana

Trearddur Rd, Trearddur Bay, Holyhead LL65

15 minute drive from Silver Bay

Here you are getting two beaches in one with these two neighbouring small sandy coves. Located within a short walking distance from Trearddur Bay, these beaches are extremely popular with locals and tourists alike. Porth Diana is the largest of the beaches and is commonly used by the local yacht club for mooring. For those looking to swim or snorkel then Porth Castell is the better choice.

Borthwen, Traeth Borth Wen

Rhoscolyn, Holyhead LL65 2NX

12 minutes drive from Silver Bay

Borthwen is located approximately halfway between Traeth Bychan and Benllech, it has a shore of pebbles, rocks and rock pools backed by low cliffs. Access to this beach is down a little-used path, be careful these are very steep steps. There is a small free car park near the beach and the beach also hosts a few basic amenities including toilets and showers.

This is a great beach for the entire family with its shallow sloping sands and abundance of rockpools to explore. The most popular activities are kayaking/canoeing, diving, snorkelling, sailing and swimming.

Silver Bay/Traeth Llydan, Rhoscolyn

We couldn’t write this list without including the beach right here at Silver Bay! If you love quiet secluded beaches then this is the perfect place for you. This crescent-shaped shady bay is about 600 yards wide with a few rocky islets and a colourful variety of pebbles that can be found on the shore. Silver Bay Beach is perfect to walk your furry friends as this beach is dog friendly.

If you’re looking to explore a little more of Silver Bay, visit Porth yr Ych a short distance to the west, this small cove of rocks and shingles is perfect for those like a little physical adventure.

It is also worth remembering that there are picturesque coves all the way around Holy Island ready for you to explore.

We are thrilled to announce that we are on the list of the cleanest beaches in North Wales.

Clean Beaches in North Wales

New figures revealed earlier this month found that North Wales has some of the cleanest bathing water in Europe. 34 out of a total of 44 beaches in the area have achieved the EU’s highest water standard, ‘excellent’. We’re thrilled to announce Silver Bay beach is on that list.

The remaining spots received either a ‘good’ or ‘sufficient’ rating for water quality. The figures also show that the amount of ‘excellent’ waters across Wales has gone up from 78 to 83 over the past year.

Excellent bathing water quality is one of the key criteria required for a beach to earn the prestigious Blue Flag status; we are proud to have been awarded a Green Coast Award, part of the Blue Flag awards, earlier this year.

Wales Coast Awards

The Blue Flag is part of the Wales Coast Awards, run by Keep Wales Tidy, which honours the region’s best beaches and marinas. This year, we became the first private business to apply for a coast award on behalf of a beach. We are now the proud owners of the Green Coast Award, which is awarded to beaches that don’t have the infrastructure and management of a traditional seaside resort. The Green Coast Award recognises the hidden gems along our coastline and we are thrilled that Silver Bay has earned that accolade.

To be awarded the Blue Flag status a beach must meet a strict set of criteria. This includes cleanliness, safety and facilities. The award also looks at beaches that meet high environmental standards and tough international bathing water quality standards.

The Blue Flag is important as it helps to set the standard high for beaches, marinas and boat tour operators. It also guarantees that you, as a visitor, have arrived at a quality destination.

Our holiday homes are located within walking distance from Silver Bay beach, perfect for a beach day or a leisurely stroll. The beach is also home to our school holiday activities, such as our sandcastle competition and beach mudder (think Tough Mudder but with sand).

If you’re interested in finding out more about life here at Silver Bay, you can download our brochure for more information.

The Blue Flag Award recognises beaches, marinas and boats for their high environmental and quality standards. The award is internationally recognised and reassures visitors that a beach is safe and clean. There are 7 beaches on Anglesey with a Blue Flag award, keep reading below to see which beaches have been awarded for their excellence. To be awarded the Blue Flag status, beaches, marinas and boats must meet a certain set of criteria, a few examples of criteria include:

Environmental Education

A beach map locating different facilities must be on the beach, along with information on the award itself and details of the water quality. Increasing awareness and care for the local environment is an important aspect of the Blue Flag award and therefore at least five activities that promote this must be carried out, preferably during the Blue Flag season.

Water Quality

The beach must comply with the water quality sampling, no industrial, waste-water or sewage should affect the beach area.

Environmental Management

The beach and surrounding areas must be clean and maintained, waste bins and containers must be available in adequate numbers with facilities for recycling and an adequate number of toilet facilities must be available and kept clean at all times.

Safety and Services

First aid equipment must be available on the beach, including lifeguards if appropriate, along with a supply of water and emergency plans to cope with pollution risks.

Blue Flag Beaches in Anglesey

Anglesey has an impressive 6 Blue Flag beaches as of 2020, meaning it is home to some of the best quality beaches in the world. Take a look at what beaches have earned this international, prestigious status:

The excellent water quality at the beach makes Church Bay an ideal place for swimming, along with other fun activities such as sailing and fishing. The beach can be accessed via a steep footpath from the village. We are thrilled to announce that we received a Green Coast Award by Keep Wales Tidy.

The Green Coast Award recognises the beautiful, untouched and rugged beaches for their excellent water quality and unspoiled environment. Unlike the beaches that have received a Blue Flag Award, a Green Coast Award beach doesn’t have the infrastructure and intensive management generally associated with the more traditional seaside resort.

In order to receive the Green Coast Award the beach must comply with the following criteria:

  • Have excellent water quality
  • Encourage dog and horse owners to clean up after their animals by providing suitable facilities and literature
  • Have a guardianship scheme in place
  • Provide information on locally organised environmental activities
  • Public access to the beach must be safe and well maintained

Wales has some of the most beautiful and well managed beaches in the world. The Wales Coast Awards help to raise environmental awareness, recognise good practice and promote Wales as an international destination.

18 beaches in Wales received the Green Coast Award this year, recognising all the hidden gems on our coastline. The award helps to encourage people to “adopt” areas of the coast. This helps contribute towards the sustainability of the area while promoting volunteering. We are also the first private business to apply for a coast award on behalf of a beach.

The local contribution is evident in recent news with Anglesey announced as the UK’s first Plastic Free Community. This was decided by the marine conservation charity, Surfers Against Sewage.

What other environmental initiatives are we involved in?

Obeewan Silver Bay beekeeper

Our dedication to preserving the natural environment and supporting British wildlife is a priority for us. We also received the David Bellamy Gold Award for our commitment to protecting the local wildlife, reducing energy use, recycling waste, and supporting the local community. As part of our commitment to the rural environment and the impact of the coastal path, we have also started to plant indigenous species to reestablish the flora and fauna.

And not forgetting our honey bees. The bees are still in their winter home at the moment but will be moving back this month. They were very busy during the warm spell in April; so much so that we had to hire an extra pair of hands (or paws). We also made up some extra frames in anticipation but Obeewan was too busy eating all the honey so our beekeeper, Jonathan, had to do it all by himself. Starting in the May half term holidays, we will be offering ‘Meet the Bees’ sessions throughout the summer so our owners can have the opportunity to meet the queen and her workers.

You can find out more about our beach and boat park as well as any further updates on our ongoing work to benefit the local wildlife and environment.

Silver Bay Holiday Village are now members of the National Trust, Wildlife Trust, RSPB and Red Squirrel Trust. We have also, once again, been awarded the David Bellamy Gold Award. We are very proud of this achievement and it further strengthens our commitment to conserving the local area and wildlife. Read on to find out about each membership and what this means for Silver Bay and our owners and visitors.

National Trust and Wildlife Trust

As a member of the National Trust we aim to help the organisation achieve its aims of giving everyone access to Britain’s beautiful landscapes and spectacular coastlines whilst helping to take care of it. Similarly, our membership with the Wildlife Trust will help support the preservation of wildlife and wild places in the local area as well as helping our owners get closer to nature.

RSPB

Silver Bay and the local area is home to a multitude of bird species, from puffins to sparrow-hawks, so it’s no surprise that we’re a member of the RSPB. With species numbers declining dramatically in recent years, we’ll be working with the RSPB to help their recovery.

Red Squirrel Trust

Another animal that is at risk in our local area is the red squirrel. Earlier this month we had a visit from Holly, our Red Squirrel Ranger from the Red Squirrel Trust, and we are over the moon to hear that there is evidence of red squirrel activity in our woodland area. Holly will be popping back to check on the activity so we’ll make sure to keep you updated. Why not take a walk and see if you can spot one yourself?

David Bellamy Award

Last but not least, we’re happy to announce that we have once again being awarded the David Bellamy Gold Award. This award recognises our commitment to protecting the local wildlife, reducing our energy use, recycling our waste, and supporting the local community.

To find out more about our beach and surrounding area, take a look at our beach page. We’ll also be keeping you updated on local wildlife and nature so make sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to be in the know. If you would like to find out more about owning a holiday lodge here at Silver Bay, you can download our online brochure or request a callback and a member of our friendly team will be in touch.

Over the next couple of months we are welcoming a brand new football pitch together with a multi use games area (MUGA) to provide all of our owners the perfect space to have fun and play a multitude of sports.

The new football pitch (turf being laid as we speak) will be situated on the field behind the spa and will be accessed by a new path. Whether it’s a large group or just a couple of friends having a kickabout, the new pitch will offer a great space for the whole family to enjoy. The backdrop of the Llyn Peninsula will make this a stunning area to enjoy a little exercise and competition!

The tennis court is also currently being transformed into a MUGA, meaning the court will be multifunctional – great to play tennis as well as a variety of other sports including football, netball and basketball.

We’ll make sure to keep you updated on the progress and will follow up with photos of the new pitch and MUGA when they are ready. Keep an eye out on our blog, as well as our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts for any updates.

Our stunning beach is a home to sea, sand, and a bucketload of fun – and we do everything we can to make sure it looks the part too!

From making sure our coast is green (which has won us a Green Coast Award) to improving our beachside facilities with our beautiful cafe (it’ll be open soon!), we endeavour to make every visit to Silver Bay Beach one to remember.

Seaside Award

We were thrilled to discover last week that we’re now the proud owners of a Seaside Award. Presented to us by Keep Wales Tidy as part of the Wales coast Awards, the award recognises Silver Bay Beach for it’s tidy and well-tended to coast and waters.

We’re incredibly proud to everyone who works hard to make Silver Bay Beach the picturesque beach haven that it is. The Seaside Award recognises those coasts that meet the nationwide standard for the best beaches across the UK, and the flag is a symbol of superb quality, where visitors are guaranteed to find a clean, safe, attractive and well-managed stretch of coast.’
