Silver Bay, Rynys Lligwy, will now be known as Woodland Falls Rynys Lligwy. Having taken ownership of the holiday park, formerly known as Rynys, and having spent time really understanding the strengths of the park, we feel that Woodland Falls perfectly summarises the beautiful woodland environment, together with the brook that’s synonymous with the location.

Current owners can expect the same high standards and experience from both Silver Bay and Woodland Falls holiday parks in the future, as they have in the past.

Anglesey has plenty of cycling routes to choose from, with a range of coastal, forest and mountain views.

So that you can continue to enjoy the stunning scenery of Anglesey in the winter months, we’ve put together some cycling routes more suited for the wetter weather. That way, when you inevitably get caught in the rain, it won’t ruin your cycle.

Newborough Forest Drive – Cycle Route Loop from Niwbwrch

Level – Easy

Distance – 10.4 miles

Climb – 350 ft

Parking / transport – Begins and ends next to a car park

If you’re on the search for a route suitable for the whole family, this cycle loop is for you.

Starting with a one mile slightly sandy path, the rest of the route takes a paved forest route avoiding muddy swamps!

Bridge View (Afon Cefni) – Bike path along the Cob Pool Loop from Bodffordd

Level – Intermediate

Distance – 28 miles

Climb – 500 ft

Parking / transport – Begins and ends at a car park

For a slightly more challenging route, we suggest this loop taking you around Anglesey past a river, through newborough forest, and along Traeth Llanddwyn beach. With it being easily accessible by car, this is a must try cycling route this winter.

St. Cybi’s Church – RAF viewing area Loop from Rhosneigr

Level – Intermediate

Distance – 33.4 miles

Climb – 850 ft

Parking / transport – Begins and ends at a train station

Another popular cycling route taking you past an RAF viewing point is this loop. Mostly on paved paths, this is a great choice for those rainier days.

Llanberis Pass – Menai Suspension Bridge Loop from Llanfairpwll

Level – Difficult

Distance – 47.5 miles

Climb – 3,875 ft

Parking / transport – Begins and ends at a train station

Lastly, for the cycling pros who will go the extra mile for a spectacular view, this ones for you. This cycling loop will take you through some incredible mountain valleys, glacial features, and across the menai suspension bridge.

You can also enjoy a well needed coffee (or shelter from the rain) at Ogwen Valley visitors centre and snack bar at 33 miles.

Nestled into the rich woodland of north east Anglesey, Woodland Falls Holiday Park Lligwy offers the perfect tranquil retreat. With the award-winning Lligwy beach just a short walk away, this site has the best of both worlds and the comfort of our Luxury Eco-Friendly Lodges at its heart.

50-Year Licence

One of the greatest benefits to owning one of our Luxury Eco-Friendly Lodges at Lligwy is the longevity of the licence. Unlike most other holiday parks, we offer a a 50 year licence on all new lodge plots. This gives you both greater value for money in the time you have ownership of your property, and also affords you a greater sell-on value compared, should you wish to sell your holiday home at a later date.

Eco-Friendly and Sustainable

We’re proud to lead the way in offering a more sustainable holiday home experience with our Luxury Eco-Friendly Lodges. Among some of the first in the UK, our lodges offer a more sustainable way of living, with solar panels and water pump technology; whilst not scrimping on the luxurious comfort you’d expect from the Bulmer’s Holiday Park experience. In the current financial climate, our eco-friendly technology provides a more sustainable running cost for our holiday homes.

Our aims go beyond the lodge offering, with targets of reducing our carbon footprint by 50% by 2030. Learn more about our sustainability goals and projects.

Our Eco-Friendly Lodges come fitted with solar panels

Fully Furnished Holiday Homes

Another benefit to our Luxury Eco-Friendly Lodges is that they are furnished and ready for you to move into. Our contemporary furnishings offer you the perfect home away from home, without the hassle from the moment you sign on a property.

Woodland Falls Facilities

There’s plenty more to Woodland Falls Holiday Park Lligwy than just our Luxury Eco-Friendly Lodges. Our site has a fantastic new Leisure facility for residents to enjoy during their stays. Why not grab a coffee or alcoholic beverage with friends or family at The Oaklands, play a game of pool in the games room or get active in the gymnasium or fitness studio?

Our wonderful island of Anglesey is bursting with exciting experiences for visitors and owners at our parks. With over 130km of coastline, the water around the island has long been the playground of North Walians. And no area more so than the Menai Strait. The 16-mile stretch of water separating Anglesey from the mainland is brimming with exciting excursions and lined with beautiful places to visit.

So, to help you try something new and thrilling next time you stay with us, we’ve put together a number of recommendations along the Strait.

By Sea

One of the best ways to experience the Strait is by boat, with lots of trips available. RibRide is one such provider, offering speedy trips along the Strait, showing you all the sights, including the bridges, directed by knowledgeable guides.

Phil Scott owner of RibRide on their service: “We’ve been operating for 16 years and the experience has never become any less exciting. Due to the unique landscape, the history, stunning wildlife and having one of the highest tidal ranges in Britain, the experience is slightly different every year.

“Customers regularly feedback a number of things once their ride has finished; usually expressing their love of the wildlife on show, their excitement of the RibRide experience and their fascination with the stories and history we offer on the region and the two bridges during the trip.” If you’re interested in their experiences, click HERE

For those of you who like to get in the water, you may be interested in Plas Menai – The National Outdoor Centre. Situated on the mainland shore, close to Caernarfon, the amazing activity hub offers a huge range of experiences to get involved in. From Kayaking to paddle boarding, windsurfing to sailing and much more. Learn more HERE. Note – The centre is currently closed for a major refurbishment until April, but activities can be pre-book for its reopening.

If you’d like to enjoy the Strait at a more gentle pace, then there’s plenty of other boat trip options, such as Seacoast Safaris. Setting sail from Beaumaris, on Anglesey’s south eastern point, this brilliant boat trip explores the wildlife of the region.

As well as taking in the beauty of the Menai Strait, you can experience grey seals, the Puffins of Puffin Island, dolphins and plenty more. Full details can be found HERE

Puffins off the coast of Anglesey

By Land

If you wish to experience the region without climbing aboard any boats, there’s plenty to do along the coast. Beaumaris itself is a beautiful town, featuring both a castle and a historic prison, Beaumaris Gaol. If you’re looking for more history but somewhere slightly bigger to explore, then there’s the cathedral city of Bangor on the mainland coast too.

Further west along the Strait there’s the stunning National Trust site of Plas Newydd House & Gardens as well as the Anglesey Sea Zoo. All in all, the Menai Strait offers more brilliant experiences for all the family to enjoy than you can shake a stick at.

So, next time you visit us at either of our sites, remember that the travel time to the Strait and it’s crossings is just a 30 minute drive from Rhoscolyn and a little over 20 minutes from Lligwy.

What makes Anglesey an island is the Menai Strait. The narrow, 24 kilometre stretch of water separates it from mainland Wales and to many, when spotted, provides the first pang of excitement on the approach to the beautiful island.

However, historically it was seen as more of a logistical inconvenience, one that was eventually overcome, to link the riches of Anglesey and beyond to the mainland more substantially.

Stories of disastrous ferry crossings and even herding livestock across the Strait during low tides finally came to an end in the early 1800s.

Menai Bridge

Completed in 1826, the bridge was designed by famed civil engineer of the day, Thomas Telford. Telford was tasked with finding a way of shortening the travel time between London and Holyhead, for those travelling back and forth from Dublin With Ireland having recently become part of the British Empire (1800), travel and trade had increased.

The Menai Strait proved the biggest hurdle, with only ferry travel available at the time. This was more difficult than the short distance seemed, with the challenge of two different tidal currents and four tidal shifts per day. Telford concluded that a bridge linking Anglesey to the Welsh mainland was the best way forward. His design would become the world’s first major suspension bridge and reduced the London to Holyhead (A5) travel time nine hours, from its then 36 hours, yes 36!

Still in use today, the structure is grade 1 listed and stands opposite the only other crossing to Anglesey, Britannia Bridge (Pont Britannia).

Menai Bridge and Snowdonia in the background
Menai Bridge at night

Britannia Bridge

Completed in 1850 and designed by railway pioneer Robert Stephenson, it was created to connect Anglesey to the mainland rail network to further improve travel to Holyhead. With railways advancing the way we travelled in the Victorian era, further connecting Holyhead London was vital.

The original bridge remained in place until the 1970s, when a fire all but destroyed the original. Years of rebuilding led first to it’s reopening (1972) and then to an upgrade, with a second deck. Opening in 1980, the upper deck was created to accommodate car traffic, with rail traffic running underneath, as it does today.

Both stand as important historical developments, not just because of their ingenuity, but also because of the role they took, and continue to take in linking Anglesey to the Welsh mainland.

Pumpkin Picking at Hooton’s Homegrown

A great way to get little ones involved in Halloween is to go pumpkin picking! Lots of farm shops are now offering the chance to pick your own pumpkins in time for Halloween decorating! Hooton’s Homegrown farm shop on Anglesey, already well known for its produce, is a great place to give it a go.
